Pull the Death tarot card and if the person you’re reading for (or if you’re pretty new to tarot yourself) doesn’t know what that card means, they tend to shrink back a little bit. Let’s be real, the word ‘death’, a skeleton riding a horse, and the Grim Reaper aren’t exactly things that we associate with daffodils and rainbows.

When you look at the character of Death in fairy tales you will find that Death isn’t a person or creature or whatever it is exactly that is running around trying to collect souls. On the contrary, Death is often down for a game. Death serves as a reminder that we all have the choice in what it is that we choose to pursue. We all have free will and we are all tested by the comfort we seek versus the discomfort that will get us there.

The standard image of the Death card depicts people of all economic classes dead or dying, serving as a reminder to us that we are all together in the human experience of endings.

Death presents an invitation to examine what you need to put an end to. What is not serving you and what are you holding onto so tight that it’s keeping you from moving ahead. Where are you acting like the fairy tale character of Death and tricking yourself into thinking that you’re making good choices when really you need to be seeing things as they are and cutting your own ties to that which needs releasing?

As the month of October moves forward and we get closer and closer to Halloween the energy around us is changing and we are invited to explore this topic.

October and November are these portals to self-examination, connection with all that can’t be seen, and death itself.

Who were you this past year and where are you tricking yourself into thinking that that’s who you need to be going forward? Where are you gambling with yourself?

Halloween represents connection with the dead and with the leaves dying and all the spooky décor, challenge yourself to lean into the theme and shed something of yourself.

Every day you’ve lived, every version of yourself, and every dream left behind is a living version of something that is, essentially, dead. Use what you know to be true about yourself and your life experience to harness this season and the energy of death to close the door on an area of life or of yourself to make space for whatever it is that comes next for you.
